A Long Time Ago

Image

The sun was shining so bright that early morning while I was walking on cloud-like-green-grasses, holding an empty gallon while I was on my way to the well.
A few meters away, I saw my grandpa with his favorite old machete (as old as he is) while building his nipa hut. Who would have thought that a 90 years old man can still effectively work a classic style and a strong "kubo" without anyone's help?
"Looooo!" I yelled his name and I saw that he widely smiled as a response. Noo. Surely, he didn't hear me. He just saw me from a distance.

Together with my younger siblings, looking for firewood in spinney, there I saw my grandpa with his favorite old machete-refining his healthy vegetable garden. Who would have thought that a 90 years old man can still manage to take care of his garden better than his own health?
He saw us and called my name with his loud ecstatic voice, " Dayaaan.. " while his gesturing his right hand waving at us to come over. We ran with full of excitement because we knew, he always have that kind of sweet surprise.
We saw crumpled leaves of banana with a tie on it beside him. He got that and gave it to us.
We immediately opened it full of joy and laughter. Ohh! pieces of big and ripe guavas which was our favorite.

Birds that were flying above the sky, returning to their respective homes that give more beauty to the sunset. What an aesthetic red-orange velvet cloud. As I was admiring the beauty of God's creation, there I saw my grandpa with his favorite old machete and tree seedlings while cultivating his land. Who would have thought that a 90 years old man would still plant more trees instead of thinking that he's old enough to work?
I walked over to him, as close as inches away so he could clearly hear my voice. "Loooo. what is this for?" I asked. "One day, you will need this". he serenely replied. We watered the seedlings of trees with love. He watered it full of love. I see a true treasure of God's creation and that can only be found in my grandpa's heart.

It was summer and we're having fun collecting coconuts that were scattered around in the ground as we were harvesting coconut trees while others were busy making a coconut "lamaw", with ice cubes, biscuits, and a condensada to add flavor. My grandpa helped us with his favorite old machete collecting and counting the number of harvested coconuts. That was a perfect, pure and priceless moment of happiness. Who would have thought that a 90 years old man can still make money from his farm?
During the night, we visited my grandpa's house and there I saw him sitting on the corner, idle with eyes closed. We ran over to him, our giggles woke him up. He smiled and composed himself into his most comfortable sitting position because he knew that we are ready to hear his myth story with, of course, superb lessons at the end of every story.

Really! If I can describe a versatile person, that would be him. Who would have thought that a 90 years old man with his favorite old machete can still make a sculpture out of wood? Did I forget to tell you that he's also a sweet, caring and loving husband to my granny? He always woke up at midnight to make porridge for her. He's an excellent doctor too- to me , and to the whole family. He can amazingly make medicines out of herbs to cure our sickness or injuries.

In his 95 years of existence, growing up, I witnessed how great and amazing my grandpa was during those good old times -and he will always be amazing. His humbleness, generosity, kindness and everything-during worst and best times, ups and downs. That bond we had with his favorite old machete making a "luthang, kasing, patidit, and a gun that was designed of wood where we can use it when we're playing pusil-pusil with my cousins and friends". That pure joy we had when we were in his farm , took his carabao to a bath with mud. That was my favorite thing to do.

My grandpa knows exactly how proud I was to him. I kept on sharing stories to my classmates even to my new friends how extraordinary he was.
Even though he didn't know, I shared his story to the closest people I was around. I was hoping that one day, I can share how awesome he was to all people and I guess that is already happening now as I am now writing his stories. I am a proud granddaughter of my 90 years old grandpa with his favorite old machete even in his last sleep, which made him rest in peace.
My 90 years old grandpa with his favorite old machete, who was once an engineer, sculptor, doctor, agriculturist, businessman, a great husband and a grandfather. The most amazing thing about him, he's a faithful servant of God in a kind where there is no need for a showcase.

My grandpa deserves a golden mantle in heaven and I believe he's wearing it now with true cheers of success.
