THE INFLICTION

Nina was displeased at the behavior of Jack, whom she considered for a good employee. She decided to get off from the car so as to shun this embarrassing conversation. She opened the car handle and got off and started walking. Jack was dismayed to see Nina walking away so he started following her. When Nina realized that Jack is following her, she stopped and declared to Jack that her feelings do not resonates to that Jack and it is better to stop this conversation forever. “I always considered you as a good colleague. I never had the slightest idea that you were stalking me all this time; but for what? If you want us to remain on good terms in our work-life then it is better if you do not follow me.” Jack looked disappointed but Nina could not see the apprehension in his eyes; the apprehension of lost love. As Nina started walking away, Jack walked heavily towards his car, wiped the tear rolling down his dead-white cheek. He finally got in his car and flashed past Nina as she was walking down the road. After walking for about two minutes Nina looked around. It was all dark and bleak around her. She decided not to stop so that she could reach the bus stop soon. However, when she started walking, she heard footsteps coming after her. For a moment, she could not make sense of the situation and a cloud of fear engulfed her. She managed to get hold of herself and looked back and saw a middle-aged man in shabby clothes standing beside her. He was holding a blood-stained baseball bat in one hand and an old feathered hat in the other. He had a grim smile on his face and on seeing this Nina turned pale as if frightened to death and started running on the road. She ran as if she was running for her life and dropped her wallet on the road. The man still followed her and was running after her. She was aware of the fact that the road was a long one so as to escape the man she decided to run towards the forest beside the road. Nina was constantly running and looking back and at one instance she fell down when her foot tripped over a small rock. She tried to get up and while looking up she saw the man standing in front of her. At that moment Nina could not think of what will happen next.
